David Joshua, “Heaven Sent”

For as much of a proponent as I’ve been of David Joshua’s work, he never had made it on an Acoustiganza lineup.
That all changes this month though.

Monday Mixteen: 3/25/19
David Joshua, “Heaven Sent”

David wrote me a long letter about this song, so I’m gonna try to give the Cliffs Notes version. One comment though of his, though, struck me in particular. He said that this song “strongly departs from the idea that a pursuit of Jesus is always clear, fun, easy and safe. In fact, it has been my experience, it is just the opposite.” Throughout the song, he discusses the personalities he’s encountered working at a church, the struggles of those mistreated, and the idea that even our greatest trials and tribulations are heaven sent.” I just hope my Cliffs Notes of “Heaven Sent” are good enough that you all can pass the pop quiz later.

David Joshua, “Come Closer”

The Ghost was supposed to rebroadcast Wednesday’s episode of Ghost of Blind Lemon Radio today, but that did not happen since the station is on hiatus. If the rebroadcast had occurred, perhaps you would have caught the work of Mr. Joshua in the Musician Spotlight. Instead, I’ll close off this playlist with this beautiful track off of his last album, These Handwritten Letters.

Song Debut, “O’When Heaven Kissed Earth”
You know what the problem with Christmas songs is?  They have a limited shelf life.  Play a Christmas song in the middle of July, and you’ll get odd looks at best.  Christmas songs should be played no earlier than the day after Thanksgiving, and absolutely no later than New Year’s Eve.

What if there was an exception to that rule?  I think my friend David Joshua may have found a solution.  His new track, “O’When Heaven Kissed Earth”, does not literally reference Christmas.  Instead, it focuses on the birth of Jesus, and in rather poetic terms (as displayed by the song title). The verses are solid, but its the melodic lift that leads to the chorus where the maximum emotional impact is felt. If I were to have a complaint about the song, it would be its length.  It clocks in at a mere two minutes and twelve seconds, leaving me longing for more.  On the scale of things to complain about, that’s not so bad. And the fact that I could even imagine listening to this song year round? Now that’s a gift of a Christmas song.

Ten for Your Attention This Thursday: 9/14/17
David Joshua (formerly David Trust and lead singer of Velvet Guard) is back with a new EP called Signals.  The album releases Friday, but he’s been kind enough to let me debut a track before the release.  The song is “Heaven Sent”.  and the lyrics to this are easily some of the strongest from David and this point.

Ten for Your Attention this Tuesday: 12/20/16
Ever since his days in Velvet Guard, The Ghost has always taken an interest in the music of David Joshua (formerly known as David Trust). His new EP, Plan A, has a much less brooding feel than his previous solo album, Art of Insanity. Check out “Heart and Soul” to get a taste of the lighter, brighter sounding David Joshua.
